CHAPTER ELEVEN

He steeled himself for her response, prepared for the full force of her fury. He thought she would shriek with rage or strike out with her fists. Jabari took a deep calming breath.

Elizabeth’s lower lip dropped and her eyes took on a queer blank expression. She opened and closed her mouth, looking indeed like a samak , a fish, trying to form words that did not come.

Then she squinted. Her lips trembled. She doubled over shaking. Concerned, he took a step toward her to offer comfort, then realized she didn’t cry.

Her body quivered with silent laughter. Elizabeth straightened, putting a hand to her mouth.

"Marriage! All the sudden you want to get married!" she sputtered, enunciating each syllable.

"I do not jest," he said, stiffening with pride. "I am most serious, Elizabeth. We must be married."

"Why? You’re having a sudden attack of morality?"

Patience slipped a few notches. Jabari glared at her. "You do not understand. Things have changed between us, now that I know who you really are." He reeled in his temper and blew out a breath through his teeth. No one laughed at Jabari bin Tarik Hassid. Not even Queen Kiya herself would dare.

He gripped her hand and led her over to the bed, urging her to sit. She wiped her streaming eyes, amusement dancing across her face. "Jabari, please, you simply are not making any sense. First you say you will let me free and now you want to marry me?"

"I will explain then." Relief surged through him. She didn’t laugh at him. Elizabeth was just confused. He wondered how to put it into words that she would understand. How could Elizabeth, raised with Western ways and ideals, even begin to comprehend the seriousness of what he was about to tell her? She had no connection to his people and their rigid code of honor. If only he could break down the barrier between their cultures….

Then it struck him. Elizabeth was half Egyptian. Surely it was bred into her blood, the ancient mysticism and connection to the past. Her fainting episodes. They must have a deeper meaning!

"Elizabeth, the strange dreams you have experienced since we met, can you tell me what you saw?"

She frowned. "Does this have anything to do with what you’re going to tell me?"

"It could be. I suspect the two are tied."

"They were…" Her beautiful eyes clouded, as if she searched her memory. The first one began at the dig, just before I met you when I held the artifact in my hand. And it was like I was transported…back into time. Like someone else was inside me." She gave a light laugh. "It sounds ridiculous."

"Go on. How many times has this happened?"

"Two other times. Once here." Wonder dawned in the depths of her blue irises. "And when I saw you in the main wadi. I touched the rock near where the Almha was buried and my hand tingled."

"Ah yes," he murmured. "No wonder you discovered the Almha. What you experienced was a connection to the past.
